Last month, Facebook updated their Android app outside of Google Play, using their own servers instead which was something a bit unusual compared to how every app on Android usually gets it’s updates right through the app store. As such, Google informed developers this week about a new policy regarding app updates, a policy that was aimed right at Facebook.
Under the new Play Store rules, apps are prohibited from updating themselves by any means other than the usual Google Play Store update procedure. There’s no direct evidence that this is in response to Facebook though, but the timing is awfully coincidental, and not many other apps or developers have tried to update their apps outside of the store.
