Sigma has announced the DP3 Merrill, the latest in its range of
unusual fixed-lens compact cameras. The DP3 pairs a 50mm f/2.8 lens with
Sigma’s unique APS-C Foveon X3 sensor, which essentially stacks three
15.3-megapixel layers on top of each other; Sigma claims this equates to
a 46-megapixel image, though in practice the resulting shots aren’t
necessarily comparable to more traditional cameras.

The Sigma DP3 Merrill is the next generation of cameras from the
manufacturer and offers a Foveon X3 image sensor with 46 megapixels to
hand, offering 4,800×3,200×3 layers and 44 recording megapixels
4,704×3,136×3 layers. Other features include a Dual TRUE II image
processing engine, 7 frames continuous shooting, auto and manual focus
options, RAW+JPEG format recording, and a 3.0″ TFT color LCD Monitor to
name just a few.
