How is Windows 8: Computing Experience Redefined | On Hands Preview

Windows 8 developer build was unveiled recently at BUILD Conference officially by Microsoft and now available for download. Attendees got a chance to have hands-on Windows 8 Tablet. So, here are first impressions of Windows 8 as Operating system.

Windows 8 is dual faced, first one called Metro built for Tablets and other for Desktop. Tap the tile called Desktop, and a Windows desktop which looks a lot like Windows 7 appears. This is where the dual personality comes in.

From the moment we turn on a tablet with Windows 8 we realize what is new in Microsoft system: Homescreen. Just unlock the system and have a quick view of the new notifications: mail notifications, calls, messages and calendar events.

We have already talked about Windows 8 Homescreen. Each application has its own tile shere you can display the information you want: photos, emails, feeds RSS… In addition, applications can create additional tiles. For example, within an application feeds RSS could create an additional tile on screen with information on a specific feed.

Metro applications, A different Experience

Though we already went through all Windows 8 Feature list revealed officially. Microsoft wanted applications to be centric in Windows 8. Instead of letting each developer to make the application as he pleases, Microsoft offers a similar experience between applications.

The first is that all applications are Metro Full Screen. No taskbar, no menu bar. Everything is the application, no commands, only content.

From any application, you can access a shortcut menu by sliding your finger from the right edge inward. There are several options: Search, Sharing, Home, Devices, and Settings. In Settings you can quickly change some system settings (volume, brightness, notifications, Internet …).

Windows 8 Picture Management

Fortunately, Microsoft has learned from Windows Phone 7 and the Picture Management is much better than in the mobile. We can organize them into groups, and pick the size (small or large) to give more or less importance. Nor do we have to worry if we have a very large list of tables. Instead of horizontally sliding for a while, we’ll just zoom out with two fingers, move a bit and return to normal size.

Microsoft is also committed to some changes in what refers to touch gestures. In Windows 8, the long tap on an item is replaced with a “swipe down”: slide your finger down on an item. On the home screen, for example, a swipe down on a table would show the options menu of the picture.

Along with this, Windows 8 Explorer is also revamped with Aero and Ribbon Interface, tweaked for more productivity.

Multitasking Windows 8 Metro

Multitask is also present Metro. To go to the previous application, just slide your finger from the left edge and move to the previous application. This is not very accomplished: it misses a view of all open applications that are accessed through the touch interface.

In mobile tablet and we got used to the single-tasking, only one task on the screen at the same time. In Windows 8 this is not true: you can drag an application from the left edge to the side. Microsoft changes the concept of operating system in the sense that it’s not just the computer that allows applications to function. Now, applications are connected to each other and with the system.

A clear example is the possibility of share anything from any application. In the shortcut menu have the Share button. Pressing can send the content we’re looking for any other application. For example, we send a photo via Twitter, or email article to a friend, very similar to what makes Android. In addition, we have the common stock on hand which facilitates the task.

The search also happens to be a connection of all applications and not just something that the system offers. We have the traditional search of files, applications and settings, yes. In addition, we can look into the applications. Through the search button shortcut menu, you can click on the application that interest us, and find content there. For example, searching on Twitter or Facebook from the normal search interface by simply choosing that application from the menu.

All Windows 8 Devices will sync in Cloud

Microsoft also wants to have same experience on any device. Our user accounts associated with Live IDs, and our user accounts, including our photo, backgrounds and settings will be synchronized via Internet.

Our mail and calendar are also connected in the cloud, either with Windows Live, Exchange or Google (not sure it is, but there is no reason to think that not included). You can also synchronize your contacts in Windows Live, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and chat with them regardless of the service they use.

Bottomline – They have really re-invented Windows

From all above What all I understand is Microsoft has taken seriously the user experience, have thought about what is the easiest way to use the computer and have implemented it very well.

Metro have ventured to have done something totally different from what he had and they have gone great. Have unified system experience, homogenizing and interface applications. And all this without forgetting the traditional Windows, applications might not work in Metro. They have combined really well and I must say that I am very surprised.

Windows 8 Features List – All that said Officially and you should know

Windows 8 Beta may be released anytime soon now and much more has been said about it on the web. Some Rumor and some officially revealed by Microsoft itself so, I compiled up all that said on web in this article.

New Revamped User Interface

First thing first- Windows 8 will debut with a new GUI that will be primarily dedicated devices with touchscreens.Immerse UI based on the Metro, which we know even from the Windows Phone 7. Applications written in HTML5 will run in a special version of Internet Explorer 10 engine, and elements whose design is based on the tiles will certainly be easier to interact with the fingers.

Support for ARM

Windows 8 will be the first version of Microsoft’s windows that offer to support the burgeoning architecture of ARM. Information already disclosed earlier this year at CES 2011. Of course, Windows 8 will support the Intel architecture for x86, but support for the ARM will allow Microsoft to conquer new devices, primarily Tablet PC.

Internet Explorer 10

Bring Windows 8 Interactive Home Screen with Live Tiles on Windows 7

Since when Windows 8 Interface is made official, it is creating waves on web and I say it deserves. We recently covered a Windows 8 Metro IM Theme which changed many graphic elements to imitate Windows 8 but didn’t had interactive Homescreen or Start Screen. Thanks to Omnimo UI for Rainmeter, we can bring Live tiles too on Windows 7.

Rainmeter is a Desktop Customization software for which Omnimo Skin is developed by DeviantArt users. It is inspired from Windows Phone 7 so as Metro UI of Windows 8 to offer multifunctional interactive desktop.

So, if you are using this Rainmeter Skin in complimentary with Windows 8 Metro Theme, Windows 7 will look almost similar to Windows 8.

Windows 8 Interface First Look: Comprises of Live Tiles and it’s Awesome

When Windows 8 builds were leaked, I thought it will be just minor tweaking with the UI of Windows 7 but I was wrong. Microsoft surprised everyone by uncovering the Next Generation Windows 8 user interface which is really interesting and has resemblance with Windows Phone 7 Mosaic Tiles.

All applications and programs uses Live Tiles instead of icons on Start screen which lets them say something more and give more information. For example, a weather application will show Temperature on tile and on clicking it give further detailed information.

Windows 8 is Touch Device ready OS and the applications defined are of two types. One is Classic Windows which we saw in previous versions and Second made using HTML5 and Javascript.

Externally, they resemble a mobile software and work in full screen mode. For example, a built-in operating system web browser Internet Explorer 10 is initially configured to operate in this mode. In addition, were shown several widgets with a similar design.

One of the most interesting things about the UI of Windows 8 is the way can use two applications simultaneously. Because it is based on Windows 7, it is obvious it has multitasking. What is surprising is that the touch interface allows Windows 8 two applications to share screen at the same time, with just drag an application to the edge of the screen and leave a couple of seconds there, it automatically takes a “side panel” (something like Windows Aero Snap 7, but designed for tablets).

Furthermore, the transition between applications is well achieved. By simply moving your finger from one side to the center of the screen pass from one application to another. Undoubtedly, Windows 8 is a complete breakthrough with the new application framework based on Web tools such as Silverlight, HTML5 and other equally modern and XAML.

The apps created for Windows 8 using these tools are simply stunning, catch the eye, and seem to offer a user experience first class. The good news is that, apparently, this step will without losing backward compatibilitybecause in demos, we saw that it was able to run applications built for previous versions.

• Web applications on HTML5 and JavaScript, with access to system functions.
• Optimized for touch screens IE10.

Looking at the Interface, I feel that Windows 8 is built taking into consideration of Tablets (Touchscreen or non Touchscreen) but developer says that it will work perfectly even with Mouse and Keyboard.

Also, Windows Head stressed that Windows 8 is not a final name and didn’t announce any specific date for the release of Windows 8 but it is expected to be next year.

Make Windows 8 Bootable USB Pendrive easily with SBB Tool

Windows 8 Build 6.1.7850 was just leaked for download and now available on almost every torrent and file servers. If you have managed to get hands on it, you will definitely like to give it a try.

You can either use it with a virtual machine or install it separately on a disk partition. If you are using a virtual machine you will be able to use the iso file directly to install it. But if you plan to install it without using a virtual machine then the ISO  is needed to be burnt on a DVD.

If you do not want to waste a DVD for this Windows 8 release which is more or less similar to Windows 7, then you can boot it from pendrive. Methods used will be similar to the ones used earlier to make windows 7 pendrive bootable. If you find it difficult and want simpler tool then Windows 7 SBB Tool can be handy.

I tested SBB Tool in making Windows 8 M1 pendrive bootable and every thing went smooth. Basically theMilestone 1 is just a simple modification of Windows 7 and you may not find it worthy enough to waste time for.

Using Windows 7 SBB tool is extremely simple to use with only disadvantage that it cannot use iso files directly. You have to extract the ISO and point it to the application. Then you can select usb stick and sit back.

Although the tool was meant to be used for Windows 7 but it works seamlessly on Windows 8 installer too. Not just Milestone 1 but we expect all future versions including the Windows 8 Final build Bootable USB can be made using SBB tool.

Pingdom for Windows 8

Pingdom is one of the most popular web services to monitor the uptime of your website. If you are a webmaster you might be already using Pingdom as it offers free account where you can monitor one website for free. One of the best features of Pingdom is that the monitor interval is one minute, the lowest among all the services and this helps you in quickly monitoring any downtime for your website.

Pingdom already has a desktop app for Windows which can monitor your website, but now they have released a Windows 8 app to alert you about your website downtime.
